The J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu has purchased a painting by French post-impressionist Paul Cezanne, which is described as the finest still life by the artist to have remained in private hands, museum officials said Thursday.

``Still Life With Apples,'' completed by Cezanne in Aix-en-Provence Aix-en-Provence Provence (prôväNs`), region and former province, SE France. Founded (123 B.C. during the last major phase of the artist's career, was acquired from a private Swiss collection. The purchase price was not disclosed.

``I think it gives us a good balance, a representation of one of our most important painters,'' said David Jaffe, curator of paintings. ``Every modern movement claims Cezanne as their inspiration.''

The Getty owns two earlier Cezanne paintings, ``Portrait of Anthony Valabreque'' and ``L'Eternal Feminin,'' and a watercolor ``Still Life with Blue Pot.'' ``Still Life with Apples'' (1893-94) is the first mature painting by Cezanne (1839-1906) in the museum's collection.

The latest acquisition is on loan to the Philadelphia Museum of Art Philadelphia Museum of Art, established in 1875, chartered in 1876. When the city of Philadelphia planned to erect a building to house the Centennial Exposition of 1876, provision was made to keep the building permanently occupied; the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art was privately established for that purpose. Its name was changed in 1929 to the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, and the present name was adopted in 1938. for a traveling retrospective of Cezanne's work. The painting is expected to be on view in Malibu in late September.

``The longer you look at it, the more you get out of it,'' Jaffe said.

The Cezanne is just the latest important acquisition for the museum.

Last week, museum officials announced the purchase of Fra Bartolommeo's ``The Holy Family Holy Family, term referring to the child Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In the Roman Catholic Church the feast in its honor falls usually on the first Sunday after the Epiphany. There are fine examples by Signorelli, Michelangelo, and Rubens. With the Infant St. John'' for $22.5 million from a private collection in Britain. That painting will be on loan to the National Gallery in London before coming to the Getty in January.
