In the early '60s, the Stones were considered the bad-boy alternative to the Beatles, which prompted a debate among fans over which was the greatest rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music.  band.

Forty years from the Stones' beginnings in 1962, there is still a debate. Are the Stones the greatest rock band of all time? We threw out the question to members of the music community and got a wide variety of answers.

``The greatest rock band ever is called the Beatles. They are in a completely different and superior league in my honest opinion. I would put the Stones somewhere eighth or ninth. I'd have to put Fleetwood Mac ahead of them - they made better, more creative rock 'n' roll. There's a whole bunch of bands that make better, more creative, more varied rock 'n' roll. The Stones do what the Stones do, but if you love music and all of its changes and all the potential chords and melodies you can use, they're staying on a certain party track, you know, and there's more variation they have forsaken for·sake

``The Beatles are the greatest rock band ever, just listen to the 'White Album' or 'Revolver.' The Rolling Stones are definitely one of the greatest ever, and Mick Jagger is the most charismatic frontman since Elvis. The significance and diversity of the plethora of music that the Beatles conceived is unprecedented before or since. Nothing against the Rolling Stones, I think they rock, but I don't think they can touch the Beatles. I don't think anyone can.''

- BT (aka Brian Transeau), producer/recording artist

``The Stones are pretty good, but I think they are ripping off the Hives. No, seriously, they are probably the most profoundly influential band of all time. They should definitely take us on tour as soon as possible.''

- Brandon Boyd, singer for Incubus incubus (ĭng`kybəs), lascivious male demon said to possess mortal women as they sleep and to be responsible for the birth of demons, witches, and deformed children.

``I think the Rolling Stones are definitely one of the top three greatest bands of all time. Even if you don't Even If You Don't is a single released by the band Ween in 2000 on Mushroom Records. Formats

dig the Stones, you have to respect their 40 years of rockin'. Keith Richards is still the baddest rock star out there.''

- Dave DeRoo, bassist for Adema

``Of course the Rolling Stones are the greatest rock 'n' roll band ever! Why? Look at the body of work, spanning so many styles over so many years. From their earliest years, they were never limited by labels - rhythm & blues, rock, country, disco, even classical (``Bittersweet bittersweet, name for two unrelated plants, belonging to different families, both fall-fruiting woody vines sometimes cultivated for their decorative scarlet berries.  Symphony'') ... they conquered each one. They never allowed themselves to be pigeonholed but succeeded in all genres.''

- Jenn Wertz, vocalist/guitarist for Rusted Root

``I personally think hands down they are the greatest rock band ever. I think they're the standard-bearer. They set the bar to which all who follow them are compared. So as far as longevity, creativity, their ability to morph into other styles - I mean, I'll be perfectly honest with you, they haven't made a good record in, uh, 20 years. But I've seen them play live three times in the last 20 years, and they threw me down every time.''

- Greg Dulli, former singer of the Afghan Whigs, current singer for the Twilight Singers

``I like them, but I don't think they are the greatest rock band ever. I think the Jimi Hendrix Experience was the greatest, because as a trio the music was more daring and edgier. They just took more chances musically than the Rolling Stones, who were just more straight-ahead in their take on rock and roll. It's just a matter of taste and I generally prefer musicians who take a bit more chances.''

- George Duke, legendary jazz pianist, formerly of Frank Zappa's band

``Longevity is important in any form of accomplishment. 'Great' is a big little word. I've always considered them mightier than their records - in their attitude and in the power of their LIVE performances ... a prototype for myself to try to call Public Enemy the Rolling Stones of rap ... long-lasting and powerful ... which oversteps relevance.''

- Chuck D, Public Enemy

``When I think about the greatest rock 'n' roll band ever, the Stones are absolutely one of the first bands that comes to my mind. I actually think about bands like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin and the Stones are right there - and Aerosmith, I think about them as well. And the reason that a lot of those bands come to mind is because not only is it the longevity of their careers but the fact that they've continued to put out quality music, and so you're getting quantity and quality.''

- Andrew Copeland, Sister Hazel
