GETTING ROOM TO ROAM; SPECIAL-EDUCATION KIDS GET SPECIAL DAY AT CONEJO FAIR.

Sporting blue T-shirts and caps, the children also roamed around the fair, as though it was their own personal playground, taking in all the sights and sounds that were offered.

``It's fun to see the looks on the kids faces when they see the little pigs and animals in the petting zoo,'' said Oak Park resident and Special Kids Day volunteer John Vogel John Vogel is a video game developer. . ``I'm here to help the kids go on some rides . . . to spoil them a bit, and to support the community.''

Local high school students from throughout Ventura County helped out as volunteers for the Special Kids Day event, while taking some time off from class.

``A lot of people talk about this,'' said Oxnard High School Oxnard High School, or OHS as it is commonly referred to, is a public four-year high school serving grades 9-12 in Oxnard, California. The school is the oldest in the Oxnard Union High School District, and is the oldest public high school in all of Ventura County.  freshman Sarah Tinajera. ``I wanted to see it for myself, and help out the kids - there's also free rides and food!''

Organizations such as Zonta, a women's group in Conejo Valley that provides shelters for battered women, helped to coordinate the annual event.

Zonata was selected as the Service Organization of the Year for Conejo Valley, and has helped out with the Special Kids Day efforts for the past 13 years.

The Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  Elks Lodge, the Newbury Park Optimist Club and the Conejo Valley Junior Women's organization also had volunteers on hand to serve up delicious hamburgers and make the event an overall success. Pepsico Inc. provided the drinks. Police and fire department representatives were also at the fair, showing off their vehicles to the wide-eyed children.

The Special Kids Day was an all-volunteer effort. Friday marked the 17th year the event has been put on for the special children from around the community. Many corporate businesses came out to help out with the children, taking time off from their work.

``Special Kids Day exposes the children to the neat rides and atmosphere, without being too crowded,'' said Thousand Oaks High School Thousand Oaks High School is a high school established in 1962 and located in Thousand Oaks, California. It is a California Distinguished School, and offers curriculum at all levels for Thousand Oaks students. The mascot is the lancer.  special services aid Wanda Lopez. ``A lot of the kids wouldn't even come if it wasn't for this.''
