their neighborhood, officials hope to discourage criminals who may want to take advantage of dark neighborhoods and residents who are unfamiliar with their neighbors.

``We're encouraging neighbors to use this opportunity to get acquainted with their neighbors and find out if possible their work schedules,'' Stuart said. ``We're just asking residents to keep an eye out for each other, and if they see anything suspicious to give us a call.''

As part of the 19th annual national event, officials expect more than 30 million residents from more than 9,200 communities to come out to meet their neighbors and local law enforcement officers.

``It's an effort to get people out of their homes and interact with each other,'' said Pam Matsuoka, community services analyst with the city of Santa Clarita. ``It's fostering neighborhood watch and knowing your neighbors.''

Organizers say when neighbors know each other and patrol officers, they are more likely to keep watch on homes on their block and to notify the police about suspicious activity.

Locally, officials will attend several neighborhood events in days before and after the national celebration.
