GETTING `DIRTY' JOHN WATERS ON SEX, HIS NEW FILM, SEX, THE MPAA, SEX, CRUDENESS AND - OH, YEAH - SEX.

Byline: Evan Henerson Staff Writer

It's ``A Dirty Shame'' and somebody had to make it. And that someone pretty much had to be John Waters, the writer-director of ``Pink Flamingos,'' ``Serial Mom'' and ``Hairspray.''

There's not much we can say in a family newspaper about an NC-17-rated sexploitation sex·ploi·ta·tion

Or better yet, maybe we'll just clear out of the way and let John Waters, the clown prince of crudity, have his say. Love or hate his movies, the man's unique.

Waters on Johnny Knoxville: ``I think the show `Jackass' was anarchy ANARCHY. The absence of all political government; by extension, it signifies confusion in government. . The best thing you can ever do is make all kids love you and have their parents hate you, which is really a liberating thing. I remember knowing Johnny was going to be a gigantic star when `60 minutes' did the expose of all the kids who had done it and gotten hurt. This kid set himself on fire, and he was being interviewed in bed and they were asking, `What would you do today if you could meet Johnny Knoxville? What would you say?' He said, `I'd ask for his autograph.' Great!''

Waters on aspiring John Waterses: ``I get a lot of movies in the mail for me to watch. I stopped. A lot of them are really torturous.  find me. I tell you, being in drag is not enough.''

Waters on Ursula's udders: ``I just said `bigger than her head.' They were ludicrous, but the men still found it hot.''

Waters on the NC-17 rating: ``I really believe that if Clinton had been president, this would have been an R. I was shocked, but at the same time, they told me there was nothing I could cut. That's the scary part, when you think, 'Oh my God. They said they stopped taking notes.'

``The MPAA MPAA
abbr.
Motion Picture Association of America
obviously wants the NC-17 to be taken seriously and be rehabilitated, and they would like nothing more than to have a hit NC-17 movie so it's not in contracts that you can't have one. Then picket with me at Blockbuster and Wal-Mart. Send your very strong lobbyists to change those companies' positions about NC-17 movies. Then I'll take it with honor.''

Waters on sex, sex and more sex: ``My basic statement has always been `mind your own business,' and what people do sexually is their own business. Can tolerance go too far? Maybe.''

Waters (whose movie ``Hairspray'' was turned into a hit musical) on song and dance: ``With musicals, it was like Hallmark greeting cards See e-card.  for me, I hated a lot of them. But for this one, (composer) Marc Shaiman took stuff from my movie and kept it, and the producer wanted that. It was a great experience. We're doing `Cry-Baby' now. I want Marc Shaiman to do `A Dirty Shame.' ''

Waters on Baltimore: ``Everyone there thinks they're normal but they're totally insane, whereas all my friends in L.A. or New York New York, state, United States

think they're insane, but basically they're normal. Baltimore is great blue collar, and a great black neighborhood. It's where I am inspired. My house is there, my office is there. Now when I go there, I sit out in front of people's houses People's Houses (Turkish: Halk Evleri) is the institution established in 1932, founded on Atatürk's ideas, which was developed to give formal education to adults (Adult education) in Turkey. , I go to bars and hang out, and now they recognize me. Which is good because I don't get beat up in scary neighborhoods.''

Waters on compliant actors: ``Sonny Bono Salvatore Phillip "Sonny" Bono (January 16 1935(1935--) – January 5 1998) was an American record producer, singer, actor, and politician whose career spanned over three decades.  used to say, `Well, what have you not told me?' Because `Hairspray' is the only movie that made it safe to like me. Before that, he was one of the only real celebrities that would do it. I think he was afraid we'd do this and I'd say `Cut,' and 100 people would come in and eat (expletive). I think that's what he thought maybe I was doing. I calmed him down.''
