GET IN SHAPE FOR SKI SEASON WITH SKI-SPECIFIC TRAINING EQUIPMENT

GET IN SHAPE FOR SKI SEASON WITH SKI-SPECIFIC TRAINING EQUIPMENT
CHASKA, Minn., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- You've selected your equipment, checked the weather reports, made your reservations, traveled hundreds of miles and spent untold dollars in preparation for your first skiing trip of the season. You've worked hard to make this trip a reality, but are you ready to ski?
"Whether you are a ski racer on the slopes two hundred days a year or a weekend warrior, in heaven if you ski 10 days, you need 'ski specific' training to get you in SKI SHAPE," said David Lessnick, private ski instructor at Vail/Beaver Creek and author of the newly released "Ski Shape -- How To Get Fit For Skiing," an illustrated guidebook for skiers. "You need this training for three reasons: 1) to reduce injuries; 2) to increase performance; and 3) to make skiing more enjoyable," he added.
NordicSport(TM), a sleek, new line of black graphite Sport Simulator(TM) systems from NordicTrack, offers two ski-specific training alternatives for those who wish to make a safe, successful and fun start on the ski season. The NordicSport Ski(TM) simulates cross-country skiing, and the newly introduced NordicSport Downhill(TM) simulates alpine skiing.
In an article that ran last season in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Dr. Robert Voy, the former chief medical officer and director of sports medicine for the United States Olympic Committee, said skiers should treat skiing like any other strenuous physical activity and train accordingly.
"It takes a lot of cardiovascular strength," Voy said. "Remember, you're dealing with elevations when you ski. If you don't have good conditioning, you're putting yourself at greater risk (of injury and fatigue)," he added.
Like the original NordicTrack(R) cross-country ski machines, which have defined and now symbolize cross-country ski exercisers, the NordicSport Ski operates with a patented flywheel and one-way clutch mechanism to promote smooth, jarless workouts. The rhythmic motion of arms and legs moving together raises peoples' heart rates to their target zone quickly, keeping oxygen uptake at optimum levels for improved cardiovascular performance.
According to various skiing authorities, the best training programs for getting into shape for alpine skiing incorporate exercises that increase your body awareness, aerobic and anaerobic capacity, muscle endurance and strength, power, coordination, balance, agility and speed.
In "Ski Shape -- How To Get Fit For Skiing," Lessnick writes that the NordicSport Downhill can be used by skiers at all levels to enhance body awareness and condition all major muscle groups in the body. More specifically, it will help improve a skier's steering, edging, pressure, balance and agility.
The NordicSport Downhill incorporates several key engineering advances that, in Lessnick's words, "educate your body to make the right skiing moves." These advances include real skis that are designed to move laterally over an arch-shaped base in a natural sweeping motion. The skis feature a unique "pendulum" effect, which enables the skier to carve their turns and "set an edge" on the skis, and still maintain a stable center of gravity.
Experts agree that the biggest inhibitor to getting in ski shape is the boredom and monotony of some workout routines. By closely duplicating the natural motions of skiing, the NordicSport Ski and Downhill turn ski training into a fun and challenging experience that adults of all ages and capabilities can benefit from and enjoy.
