Tumblers were proposed by Ted Nelson in "Literary Machines" as a means to address every bit ever written, or a particular span of bits in any text ever written.

That may mean throwing out a little magic to help the Chico Marx-like Guilford Adams fill up his coloring book. Or it may entail counting along in butchered French as Jordan Savage's impossibly limber ballerina prepares for an exercise.
