GERMANY'S WATERWAY ENGINEERING AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE
ORDERS ITS FIRST CRAY RESEARCH SUPERCOMPUTER
New System Will Provide More Accurate Analysis of
 Germany's Rivers and Shorelines
EAGAN, Minn., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research (NYSE: CYR) announced today that Germany's Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (Bundesanstalt fuer Wasserbau), based in Karlsruhe, has ordered a CRAY Y-MP 2E system to model estuaries and shorelines throughout the country.
As an agency of the German Ministry of Transportation, the institute designs, monitors and repairs all German waterways. The CRAY Y-MP supercomputer will allow the institute to develop new, more complex computer models of these waterways to assist in construction, repair and dredging of the waterways. The system is scheduled to be installed at the Institute's subsidiary in Hamburg in the fourth quarter of 1992.
"To study our waterways previously, we actually had to build physical models of the large estuaries," said Dr. Gerd W. Fluegge, head of the Hamburg subsidiary. "These models presented a number of problems for us. They are expensive to create and they take time to build -- during which the waterway's physical characteristics are evolving and changing. As a result, the physical model may not be entirely accurate by the time we have completed building it. But regardless of how well- built or accurate these models are, scale physical models always present us with additional limitations.
"The power of a Cray Research system will allow us to create computer models which are more accurate and flexible. The mathematical models can be built and altered more quickly than physical models. As such, we will be able to start work on the real-world waterways more quickly than we have in the past."
The CRAY Y-MP 2E is the first Cray Research system ordered by the German government agency.
"Cray Research is the leader in providing high-performance tools that improve the accuracy of scientific research and engineering," said Carl Diem, vice president of international sales at Cray Research. "We are proud that this important German organization has joined the growing number of worldwide environmental research organizations who are turning to Cray Research for high-performance computing solutions."
Cray Research has 307 systems installed worldwide, including 19 systems in Germany. Approximately 27 Cray Research systems installed worldwide are devoted to weather and environmental applications.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
