GEOQUEST.

Known as Qubbat as-Sakhrah in Arabic, this building marks one of the holiest sites in Islam. Although some people call it a mosque (a Muslim place of worship), it is more accurately called a mashhad (a shrine for pilgrims). It was built over a rock where Muslims believe the prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. Abd al-Malik, a Muslim ruler, built the mashhad between 685 and 691. The octagonal building is rich with mosaics, marble, and gold.

The site is significant for other religions, too. In Jewish tradition, Abraham, one of the early Hebrews, is said to have prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac at this spot.

What is the name of the building?
