 GENERAL SIGNAL ELECTS KIDDER,
 CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF DURACELL INTERNATIONAL, TO ITS BOARD
 STAMFORD, Conn., June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- General Signal Corporation (NYSE: GSX) today announced the election of C. Robert Kidder, chairman and chief executive officer of Duracell International, to its board of directors.
 Kidder, 47, has been CEO of Duracell since 1988 and was named chairman shortly after the firm went public in 1991. Kidder joined Duracell in 1980 as vice president-finance and administration for European operations, became vice president-sales and marketing for U.S. operations in 1981, was named president of U.S. operations in 1982 and president, Duracell Inc., in 1984.
 In making the announcement, Edmund M. Carpenter, chairman and chief executive officer of General Signal, said, "During Mr. Kidder's tenure at Duracell the company has nearly doubled in size to $1.5 billion and is a recognized global leader. His wide-ranging expertise and guidance will prove highly supportive toward General Signal's accomplishment of its goals."
 Kidder is a director of the National Urban League, Danbury Health Systems Corporation, Kent School, and the Aldrich Museum.
 Kidder received a B.S. degree in industrial engineering from the University of Michigan and an M.S. in industrial economics from Iowa State University.
 General Signal Corporation, with 1991 sales of $1.62 billion, is a leading manufacturer of equipment and instruments for the process control, electrical, semiconductor and telecommunications industries.
