GENERAL SIGNAL ELECTS FAIRBAIRN, SENIOR VP OF UNION PACIFIC, TO ITS BOARD.


STAMFORD, CT--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 15, 1995--General Signal Corporation announced today the election of Ursula F. Fairbairn, senior vice president, Human Resources The fancy word for "people." The human resources department within an organization, years ago known as the "personnel department," manages the administrative aspects of the employees.  of Union Pacific Corporation, to its Board of Directors.

Ms. Fairbairn, 52, joined Bethlehem, Pennsylvania-based Union Pacific as senior vice president of Human Resources in 1990. From 1966 to 1990, she served in key executive positions with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Corporation, including IBM director IBM Director is an element management system (EMS) (sometimes referred to as a "workgroup management system") first introduced by IBM in 1993 as NetFinity Manager. Based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Armstrong operates 39 plants in 10 countries and has approximately 13,000 employees worldwide. , Inc., Menasha Corporation, and VF Corporation. She received a B.A. degree from Upsala College Upsala College was a private college in East Orange, New Jersey, USA, founded in 1893. Construction of the campus started in 1900. The college was finally closed down in 1995, after several years of financial problems.  and a M.A.T. degree in mathematics from Harvard University. She and her husband, Bill, reside in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and have two children.
