GENERAL SIGNAL ELECTS CAMPBELL, VICE CHAIRMAN OF CORNING, TO ITS BOARD
 STAMFORD, Conn., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- General Signal Corporation (NYSE: GSX) today announced the election of Van C. Campbell, vice chairman-finance and administration of Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW), to its board of directors.
 Campbell, 53, has been vice chairman of this leading worldwide manufacturer since 1983. Corning Inc. operates in four broad business sectors: specialty materials, consumer housewares, laboratory services and communications. He joined the company, which is based in Corning, N.Y., in 1965 serving in various senior managerial capacities.
 In making the announcement, Edmund M. Carpenter, chairman and chief executive officer of General Signal, said: "We are most pleased to have someone of Campbell's caliber join our board as we continue to pursue our Class I goals. His business background and international experience will be extremely important in the coming years."
 A director of Corning Inc., Armstrong World Industries, Inc., and Dow Corning Corporation, Campbell also serves on the advisory boards of the Fuqua School of Duke University and Cornell University.
 Campbell received an A.B. degree from Cornell University and an M.B.A. from Harvard University.
 General Signal Corporation, with 1991 sales of $1.62 billion, is a leading manufacturer of equipment and instruments for the process control, electrical, semiconductor and telecommunications industries.
