GENERAL SIGNAL CONSOLIDATES ELECTRICAL UNITS PRODUCT LINES

STAMFORD, Conn., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- General Signal Corporation announced today that its Goldsboro, North Carolina-based Hevi-Duty unit is being integrated into the company's Sola Electric and O-Z/Gedney units, headquartered in Elk Grove Village, Ill. and Terryville, Conn., respectively. More specifically, Hevi-Duty's heater cable and firestop product lines are being transferred to O-Z/Gedney, and its transformer- related product lines, including liquid power, distributor products, and remanufacturing/decommissioning, are being consolidated into Sola Electric.
According to Peter A. Laing, senior vice president for General Signal's electrical controls sector, "this reorganization and integration plan will serve to strengthen the electrical sector's competitiveness and improve its performance. Beyond the operating benefits afforded by the substantially increased critical mass of two key business units, there is valuable leverage to be gained in both distribution strength and market access. For example, several of the product lines are complementary, such as Sola's constant voltage transformers and Hevi-Duty's low-voltage general purpose (LVGP) transformers. They move through common distribution channels and are sold into the same industrial markets. The broader product package will make us more attractive to distributors and customers alike.
"Similarly, O-Z/Gedney serves the petrochemical markets with its hazardous location products, which are very important markets for heat trace products. Moreover, the majority of O-Z/Gedney's sales, including sales of its own firestop products, go to the construction markets, which is a good fit with Hevi-Duty's caulk and putty firestop products. As a result of these product and market linkages, I believe we will also gain increased focus, thereby stimulating needed growth in several smaller but high-return product areas."
General Signal Corporation, with 1992 sales of $1.6 billion, is a leading manufacturer of equipment and instruments for the process control, electrical, and industrial technology industries.
