GENERAL MOTORS PRESENTS LEHIGH UNIVERSITY WITH $124,000 EDUCATIONAL GRANT

DETROIT, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its five-year, $500,000 commitment to Lehigh University, officials of General Motors' Packard Electric Division today presented the school with a GM Foundation check for $124,000.
In a ceremony at Lehigh, the GM contribution was presented to the university's president, Dr. Peter Likins, by David R. Heilman, director of Packard Electric North America, the Warren, Ohio-based unit of GM which has a long-standing tradition of support to the institution.
"This $124,000 grant represents two key components of GM's overall support to Lehigh. The first $100,000 represents the third annual installment of GM's $500,000 commitment to Lehigh's College of Engineering, its Journalism and English departments, as well as its overall efforts to attract and retain minority students," noted Heilman, who was joined by his GM and Packard colleagues at the ceremony.
"We are also proud to announce that an additional $24,000 is targeted to fund a GM Teaching Fellowship for Gary Schulze, who is completing a Ph.D. dissertation in 'Fracture Mechanics of Thermal Barrier Coatings.' He is expected to complete his dissertation by June 1994. His area of research, thermal barrier coatings, is of particular interest to Packard Electric. We view Gary as an outstanding teaching candidate," added Heilman.
Among other areas of impact, GM's financial support has helped many outstanding Lehigh minority scholars pursue advanced degrees in mathematics and other related fields. In return, these "Provost Fellows" provide tutoring services for minority undergraduate students who need additional assistance in mathematics and calculus.
