    GENERAL MOTORS BEGINS VEHICLE ASSEMBLY AT JOINT VENTURE IN TUNISIA
    DETROIT, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors (NYSE: GM) today announced the start of vehicle assembly at its joint venture operation in Tunisia, Industries Mecaniques Maghrebines, (IMM).
    Located in Kairouan, about 100 miles south of Tunis, IMM will assemble Isuzu light commercial vehicles for sale in the Tunisian market and other North African countries.  Employment is projected at 370, with 1992 CY sales expected to reach 4,000 units.
    "IMM's start of production is a positive development for the Tunisian economy and reaffirms GM's involvement in business activities in Africa," said Greg DeYonker, GM's executive director for African operations.  "We're pleased that this facility is running and will work closely with our partners in Tunisia to ensure its success."
    The IMM venture was formed in 1982 with GM holding a 20-percent equity interest, Isuzu Motors Ltd. of Japan, 10 percent, and Tunisian investors the balance.  Management responsibility is held by GM's Tunisian majority partner.
    Other GM operations in Tunisia include an automotive wiring harness facility that supplies GM vehicle assembly operations in Europe.
    GM activities in Africa announced during 1991 include:
    -- In July, GM announced that it had received Egyptian government approval to assemble passenger cars at its facility near Cairo.
    -- In August, GM announced the formation of GM Nigeria to assemble light commercial vehicles for Nigeria and the West African market.
