GENERAL MOTORS ANNOUNCES EXECUTIVE APPOINTMENTS

 DETROIT, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- A series of executive appointments at General Motors component, powertrain, and engineering operations, including the election of five corporate vice presidents, was announced today by GM Chief Executive Officer and President John F. Smith, Jr.
 The GM board of directors, at its regular meeting held earlier this week, elected the following Automotive Components Group Worldwide (ACGW) executives as GM vice presidents, effective July 1:
 -- Gerald L. Elson, 51, general manager of Inland Fisher Guide Division;
 -- George G. Johnston, 61, general manager of Delco Chassis Division;
 -- Rudolph A. Schlais, Jr., 52, general manager of Packard Electric Division;
 -- Jan E. Tannehill, 53, general manager of AC Rochester Division.
 "The Automotive Components Group Worldwide appointments reflect the increasing importance and worldwide scope of GM's component operations," Mr. Smith said. "The component businesses require competitive leadership to take advantage of the potential for growth in this highly competitive, global industry."
 The ACGW officers continue to report to J.T. Battenberg III, GM vice president and group executive in charge of ACGW. The ACGW is comprised of seven divisions and 19 joint ventures, with 187 facilities employing 181,000 people.
 In addition, Mr. Smith announced the following executive appointments, effective August 1:
 -- Homi K. Patel, 52, general manager of Saginaw Division, is appointed to the new position of general manager-Manufacturing Operations for GM Powertrain Group.
 -- Thomas G. Stephens, 44, director of Engineering-Engines for GM Powertrain Group, is appointed to the new position of general manager- Engineering Operations for Powertrain.
 -- Donald L. Runkle, 48, GM vice president in charge of North American Operations (NAO) Engineering Center, continues as a GM vice president and is appointed general manger of Saginaw Division, replacing Mr. Patel. He will report to Mr. Battenberg.
 -- John J. Wetzel II, 54, currently a Saturn vice president in charge of Engineering, is elected a GM vice president in charge of the NAO Engineering Center, replacing Mr. Runkle. He will report to Arvin F. Mueller, GM vice president and general manager in charge of the NAO Technical Center.
 "The restructuring of the GM Powertrain Group will help to more effectively integrate our powertrains into vehicle applications," Mr. Smith said, "and to address challenging vehicle-related issues such as fuel economy and emissions."
 Mr. Patel and Mr. Stephens will report to Richard M. Donnelly, GM vice president and group executive in charge of the GM Powertrain Group. Powertrain has 28 plants and eight engineering centers worldwide, employing 60,000 people.
