GENERAL MILLS ANNOUNCES 75 WINNERS OF BETTY CROCKER SEARCH; Extraordinary Women to Help Celebrate the Spirit of Betty Crocker on Her 75th Anniversary; New Portrait to be Unveiled in March.


MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 1996--She feeds the homeless, helps friends move, bakes cookies for the young women in her dormitory, produces videos encouraging kids to stay in school and takes care of her immediate, extended, adopted and foster families. She's the heart of the kitchen as well as everywhere else she happens to be, which is never in one place for very long. She's Betty Crocker Betty Crocker, an invented persona and mascot, is a brand name and trademark of American food company General Mills. The name was first developed by the Washburn Crosby Company in 1921 as a way to give a personalized response to consumer product questions.  and she represents all women of today.

Following a nationwide search and sifting through thousands of nominations, judges have selected the 75 women who most embody em·bod·y

These 75 special women come from all different walks of life. Winners include: Samantha DeCerce, Colts Neck, New Jersey, a 20-year-old honors student An honors student is a student in elementary, middle, or high school recognized for achieving high grades.

Honors students are recognized on lists published periodically throughout the school year, known as "honor rolls".

"We heard from thousands of women, with extraordinarily diverse backgrounds, who truly reflect the spirit of Betty Crocker. Nominees ranged from teenagers to ninety-somethings, and included everyone from research scientists to homemakers, great-grandmothers, college students and more."

The search for 75 "Betty Crockers" was open to women 18 years of age and older. Nominees could enter themselves or be nominated nom·i·nate

"As part of the judging procedure, we weren't allowed to see photos of the women, but only read the written nominations.
