GENERAL INSTRUMENT NAMES FELIX ROHATYN OF LAZARD FRERES TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 CHICAGO, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) today announced that it has named Felix Rohatyn, 65, a senior partner of Lazard Freres & Co., a director.
 "Felix is a broad-gauge talent who will further strengthen an already strong board," said Daniel F. Akerson, chairman and chief executive officer.
 One of the nation's leading investment bankers, Rohatyn joined Lazard Freres in 1948 and became a partner in 1960. For many years until his recent resignation, he also served as Chairman of the Municipal Assistance Corporation for the city of New York, where he directed the negotiations that restructured the city's obligations during the financial crisis of the mid-1970s. He earlier served as special advisor to the governor and a member of the Emergency Financial Control Board. Rohatyn is also a director of Pechiney S.A., Pfizer Inc., and Howmet Corporation.
 General Instrument Corporation is a world leader in broadband transmission, distribution and access control technologies for cable, satellite and terrestrial broadcasting applications, as well as in discrete power rectifying components.
