GENERAL DYNAMICS WINS $72 MILLION CONTRACT FOR RADIOS

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command has awarded a $72 million contract to General Dynamics Land Systems Division to build 12,000 Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS) radios and associated system elements.
The award authorizes General Dynamics to proceed to full rate production, ultimately reaching 1,200 radios per month at its Tallahassee Operations in Florida. Work on this contract will be performed between November 1994 and October 1995.
"This contract award reflects the U.S. Army's confidence in our radio's ability to perform impressively in the field," said Henry Umanos, General Dynamics' SINCGARS program director. "Our dedicated SINCGARS team focuses on quality production and expects to win even more significant awards in the future."
Located in a 93,000-square-foot complex, the Tallahassee Operation is a custom-built facility, specifically designed for the production of highly reliable radio assemblies in volume quantities. It houses a fully automated, continuous flow production line and, in 1991, was selected by Controls & Systems magazine as a winner of the magazine's Manufacturing Excellence Award in recognition of the Tallahassee Operations' emphasis on product quality, advanced automation, and computer integrated manufacturing.
General Dynamics Land Systems Division, which builds Abrams series main battle tanks and associated support systems and services, has been producing SINCGARS radios for Army fielding since December 1992.
