GENERAL DYNAMICS CHIEF TO HEAD USO FUND-RAISING CAMPAIGN
WASHINGTON, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- William A. Anders, chairman and chief executive officer of General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE: GD), has accepted the chairmanship of The Campaign for Freedom's Finest, a special fund-raising effort slated to raise $24 million for the United Service Organizations (USO).
"Securing the leadership of Bill Anders and the involvement of General Dynamics is a terrific development for the campaign and the military families we serve," said Gen. Bernard W. Rogers, USA (Ret.), chairman of the USO World Board of Governors and a former NATO commander.
The Campaign for Freedom's Finest is USO's largest fund-raising initiative since Prescott Bush, father of President Bush, chaired the $32 million USO War Fund Campaign during World War II.
"I am extremely pleased to participate in this campaign which will improve the quality of life for the more than 1 million men and women who will continue to serve in defense of freedom and democracy around the world. It is important that the peace dividend is not paid by our dedicated people in uniform who are still answering the call to duty," said Anders.
Anders, a 1955 Naval Academy graduate and U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, flew aboard Apollo 8, America's first flight to the moon. He later served as a commissioner of the Atomic Energy Commission, as chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as U.S. ambassador to Norway, and retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a major general.
USO is a congressionally chartered, non-profit organization that receives no direct government funds and depends on philanthropic support from individuals and corporations. USO provides recreation, entertainment and human service programs for U.S. military personnel and their families.
