(ATM) products and services, today announced GDC's APEX-NPX (Network Protocol Exchange) ATM switches will be utilized by NTERPRISE, US WEST's network integration subsidiary, for its initial ATM Cell Relay A transmission technology that uses small fixed-length packets (cells) that can be switched at high speed. It is easier to build a switch that switches fixed-length packets than variable ones. ATM uses a type of cell relay technology.  Service deployment. !NTERPRISE plans to use the APEX-NPX switch as part of its three-phase, two-year rollout program, commencing today, to provide customers throughout its territory with high-speed, low delay ATM networking capabilities to deliver real time media communications among multiple locations.

The GDC APEX-NPX switch offers support for a wide variety of interfaces and network traffic types, standards-based architecture, leading-edge technology, and Switched Virtual Circuits (SVCs).

The deployment of the APEX-NPX switches follows more than a year of separate technical trials at multiple sites within US WEST territory, along with input from a 60-member private US WEST ATM Advisory Council. The trials provided understanding of the traffic characteristics of different applications and their suitability to ATM, congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

"Our customers increasingly require the high bandwidth and functionality ATM offers," said Joe Zell, !NTERPRISE executive director of Applications/Services Development. "As we rollout our ATM Cell Relay Service to our service base, US WEST and !NTERPRISE are committed to ensuring our network is based on 'best of breed' products such as GDC's APEX solution."

"GDC has been working closely with US WEST's !NTERPRISE Networking Services for the past year. We are pleased they are using the APEX-NPX switch to provision their ATM service," said Ross Belson, president of General DataComm. "The continued deployment of APEX switches by many of the world's leading telecommunications carriers, central office switch suppliers and end users is strong testimony to the strength and performance of the APEX product family."

The GDC APEX ATM switch features multi protocol support for a wide variety of network traffic, and a robust traffic management architecture that furnishes industry leading quality of service. GDC APEX is a fully scalable system that can easily -- and cost effectively -- be upgraded to accommodate incremental network growth. The ATM switch has an open network management system that provides carriers and commercial users with a highly reliable network. It is also one of the few switches available to support SVCs, based on the ATM Forum A membership organization founded in 1991 to promote ATM networking technology. It worked with ANSI and the ITU to set standards. Its first specification in 1992 defined the User-Network Interface (UNI). In 2004, the Forum merged with the MPLS and Frame Relay Alliance.  UNI version 3.0 (Q.2931).

The APEX-NPX is an ATM switching platform that permits service providers to build information networks based on ATM technology. Its unique features and safety and regulatory compliance make the APEX-NPX ideally suited for service providers, telcos, inter-exchange carriers, and Postal Telecommunications Organizations (PTO PTO
