GEMS TELEVISION LAUNCHES FIRST SPANISH-LANGUAGE CABLE PROGRAMMING SERVICE FOR WOMEN; TO DEBUT IN WESTERN HEMISPHERE ON APRIL 1

MIAMI, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- On April 1, Hispanic women throughout Latin America and the United States will tune in to a whole new form of Spanish-language television. With the launch of its international cable service, GEMS Television begins transmitting via satellite with the first and only programming format specifically designed to meet the viewing demands of Hispanic females across the Western Hemisphere.
GEMS Television will deliver a previously untapped market for cable operators and corporate advertisers. "Currently, no other cable service dedicates its full programming schedule to Spanish-speaking females," said W. Gary McBride, president and chief executive officer of GEMS Television. "We designed our format exclusively for this audience, which is undoubtedly the dominant demographic television consumer group in Hispanic households throughout Latin America and the United States."
The new cable service features enormously popular novela programs packaged in distinctively themed time blocks, as well as comedy series, movies, musicals, documentaries and mini-series. In addition, GEMS interweaves its programming with vignettes focusing on topics of interest to women, such as health, beauty, travel, fashion, career and family.
"GEMS has undoubtedly found a significant niche within the Spanish- language television industry," said M. Alexander Berger, GEMS Television chief operating officer. "Historically, limited programming options for Hispanic audiences inhibited the progress of cable television in Latin America and Hispanic U.S.A."
In the United States, Spanish-language cable penetration reaches only 37 percent of Hispanic households. "Latin America currently has only six international networks -- most of which target men, and local channels lack the international appeal that GEMS features for the continent's multinational viewing audience," he added.
Much of GEMS Television's initial programming will come from the Coral Pictures' catalogue that includes more than 10,000 hours of telenovelas, 2,000 hours of musical specials and thousands of hours of mini-series. Produced in most part by the Latin American broadcaster Radio Caracas Television (RCTV), programming provided by Coral Pictures includes first-run series, as well as major titles that have enjoyed ratings success throughout Latin America, Europe, Hispanic U.S.A. and the Middle East.
Headquartered in Miami, GEMS Television transmits 16 hours of programming daily to more than 18 countries throughout the Western Hemisphere. GEMS Television is the first Pan-American cable program service provided by International Television, Inc. (INTV) and its joint venture partner, Empresas 1-BC, which is the parent company of Venezuela's number one television network, Radio Caracas Television (RCTV).
