GEIA publishes Tin Whiskers spec, 2 others.

ARLINGTON, VA -- The Government Electronics and Information Technology Association (geia.org) in August released three industry consensus documents to help aerospace, defense and other sectors comply with the RoHS and WEEE WEEE Waste from Electric and Electronic Equipment (directive)

The standards are:

* GEIA-STD-0005-1, Performance Standard for Aerospace and High Performance Electronic Systems Containing Lead-Free Solder solder (sŏd`ər), metal alloy used in the molten state as a metallic binder. The type of solder to be used is determined by the metals to be united. Soft solders are commonly composed of lead and tin and have low melting points. Hard solders (i. , under which customers can state concerns in the form of objectives--quality and reliability, configuration control, repair and rework--and require suppliers to document the processes used to satisfy the objectives. It is for use by aerospace and defense electronics systems customers to communicate requirements to their suppliers.

* GEIA-STD-0005-2, Standard for Mitigating the Effects of Tin Whiskers See metal whiskers.  in Aerospace and High Performance Electronic Systems, which provides a framework for controlling tin whisker growth. It is structured according to levels of mitigation, as selected by aerospace and defense electronics manufacturers and users, based on the level of control required for the given application.

The documents were prepared by the Lead-free Electronics in Aerospace Project (LEAP) Working Group and are sponsored jointly by the Aerospace Industries Association, the Avionics Maintenance Conference and GEIA.

The LEAP WG is also working on two other documents to be released at a later date. They are: Technical Guidelines for Using Lead-free Solder in Aerospace and High Performance Electronic Systems Containing Lead-Free Solder and Finishes, and Technical Guidelines for Reliability Testing for Aerospace and High Performance Electronics Containing Lead-Free Solder.
