GEFFEN RECORDS JOINS COMPUSERVE MUSIC FORUM

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- To celebrate its recent entry into CompuServe's online Music Vendor Forum, Geffen and DGC Records are giving away 300 CD samplers. The promotional "Unscramble the Name of the Band Contest" offers CompuServe members a bonus in addition to regular features of the Music Vendor Forum. These include direct access to tour schedules, facts about Geffen artists, news releases and Geffen innovations, such as 30-second online sound samples, full-color logos and photographs which can be downloaded and printed.
The CompuServe Music Vendor Forum was introduced in August this year and has proven to be a popular feature, allowing music fans to communicate with each other around the world. Nearly 1.5 million CompuServe members have access to the forum, where they can "get the scoop" on artists such as Geffen's Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses and Nirvana.
Some Geffen offerings on the CompuServe forum will not be readily available elsewhere, according to Robert von Goeben, who leads the project for Geffen. "We want this online forum to be special, and it will include items such as B-side songs and rare photos," he said. "But the real benefit to users is the ability for fans to have a direct link to Geffen. One CompuServe member told me he considered talking with Geffen online 'just like speaking to Axl (Rose, of Guns N' Roses).'"
Long-term plans include online artist interviews and real-time question-and-answer sessions with fans on the forum.
"Music and entertainment is a popular and growing area within our service," said Jim Hogan, CompuServe director of product marketing. "We are committed to offering the most direct two-way communication possible between music fans around the world and major recording labels such as Geffen."
The Music Vendor Forum supplements related areas such as the Showbiz, MIDI/Music, Music/Arts, Rocknet and Sight and Sound forums, as well as Roger Ebert's Movie Reviews. Members can access the Geffen Forum by typing GO GEFFEN while online.
CompuServe members pay $8.95 per month for unlimited connect-time access to 48 basic services. In addition, more than 1,700 extended services are available for $8/hour when accessing CompuServe with a 1200 or 2400 bits per second modem and $16/hour at 9.6 or 14.4 kilobits per second.
