GE Optimization System to Boost Performance at Two of Asia's Largest Power Plants.Business Editors & Energy Writers LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 11, 2001 EfficiencyMap(TM) Software System to Improve Plants' Profitability Two of Asia's largest power plants will use a GE Power Systems advanced, software-based optimization system to increase their efficiency and profitability. GE has been chosen by Korea Electric Power This article is about Korean Electric Power Company. For the Japanese Electric Power Company, see Kansai Electric Power Company. Korea Electric Power (NYSE: KEP) is the only electric utility provider in South Korea. Research Institute (KEPRI KEPRI Korea Electric Power Research Institute ) to install its EfficiencyMap(TM) Performance Monitoring and Optimization System at the 1,800-megawatt Seoinchon combined-cycle plant, owned by Korea Western Power Inc., and the 2,000-megawatt Sinincheon combined-cycle plant, owned by Korea Southern Power Co. Ltd. Both plants are located in Inchon, South Korea. The companies are subsidiaries of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO KEPCO Korea Electric Power Corporation KEPCO Kansai Electric Power Company, Inc. (Japan) KEPCO Kyushu Electric Power Company, Inc. (Japan) ). The two plants were formerly one combined KEPCO facility known as Seoinchon Blocks 1-4, the world's largest combined-cycle power plant. These plants represent the largest installation of GE's gas turbine F technology in the world and are among the most efficient combined-cycle plants in existence today. GE will provide all of the set-up, engineering, configuration, testing and customer training for the Windows-based EfficiencyMap system, which connects to the power plant's distributed control system A distributed control system (DCS) refers to a control system usually of a manufacturing system, process or any kind of dynamic system, in which the controller elements are not central in location (like the brain) but are distributed throughout the system with each component . The EfficiencyMap system provides real-time online monitoring and reporting of equipment performance to predict the most profitable way to operate. The system measures and tracks changes in plant performance to help reduce power and heat rate losses due to degradation and to suggest controllable parameters for optimum performance. Online heat balances are used to validate and reconcile measured data, while GE's Optimizer(TM) software, a module within the EfficiencyMap system, recommends optimal set points to maximize profitability. Diagnostic software assists operators in troubleshooting plant operating issues. KEPRI's project manager, Dr. J Noun 1. Dr. J - United States basketball forward (born in 1950) Erving, Julius Erving, Julius Winfield Erving .J. Kim, said, "EfficiencyMap's key capabilities, combined with GE's extensive gas turbine generating plant experience, made this system the right choice for KEPRI. From our perspective, the most critical features of this system include the accuracy of performance evaluation Performance evaluation The assessment of a manager's results, which involves, first, determining whether the money manager added value by outperforming the established benchmark (performance measurement) and, second, determining how the money manager achieved the calculated return to within one percent, the use of data validation In computer science, data validation is the process of ensuring that a program operates on clean, correct and useful data. It uses routines, often called validation rules, that check for correctness or meaningfulness of data that are input to the system. in calculations for increased accuracy; and the use of four different operating parameters to assess overall plant performance." Installation of the EfficiencyMap system at the two plants is expected to be complete by October 2002. The EfficiencyMap system leads the worldwide market for monitoring and optimizing combined-cycle and simple-cycle plant operations and has been installed at more than 80 power-generating facilities in 13 countries worldwide since it was introduced in 1991.
