:GE), a leader in business-to-business Internet commerce, today announced that it is enhancing its Internet EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) The electronic communication of business transactions, such as orders, confirmations and invoices, between organizations. ) services by supporting two additional security protocols. The enhanced services will enable companies with significant transaction volumes to exchange documents with their trading partners over the public Internet with security comparable to private transaction networks. Companies that transact electronically can save costs and potential lost business associated with manual methods such as fax, phone and paper.

Internet EDI services from GE Global eXchange Services (GXS) now support Secure FTP (file transfer protocol A communications protocol used to transmit files without loss of data. A file transfer protocol can handle all types of files including binary files and ASCII text files. See Kermit, Zmodem and FTP. ) for document exchange over the Internet. Support for the AS2 (Applicability Standard 2) protocol will be available in early 3Q. These two protocols provide security and transaction volume support comparable to value added network (networking) Value Added Network - (VAN) A privately owned network that provides a specific service, such as legal research or access to a specialised database, for a fee. A Value Added Network usually offers some service or information that is not readily available on public  (VAN) or virtual private network (VPN) services, but use the public Internet to send and receive data. Many companies have chosen the Internet as their preferred electronic transaction platform.

Support for the AS2 and Secure FTP protocols is the next step for GXS in its offering of Internet-based transaction services. GXS already offers VPN services, hypertext markup language (hypertext, World-Wide Web, standard) Hypertext Markup Language - (HTML) A hypertext document format used on the World-Wide Web. HTML is built on top of SGML. "Tags" are embedded in the text. A tag consists of a "<", a "directive" (in lower case), zero or more parameters and a ">".  (HTML HTML

"Our enhanced Internet EDI services meet GXS's rigorous standards for security and are intended to allow companies that are currently sending a significant amount of transactions over a VAN or private network feel comfortable sending those same transactions over the public Internet," said Nick Marchetti, general manager of interchange solutions for GXS. Companies will also be able to take advantage of our extensive community management, integration and professional services capabilities, backed by more than 30 years of experience in electronic commerce.

In addition to document exchange over the Internet, companies can also use a Web browser to access GXS's EC Support Net (www.support.gegxs.net) and receive reports about their transaction activity over the Internet in real-time.

GXS's enhanced Internet EDI services support multiple Internet connectivity options -Web services, Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol 'Secure hypertext transfer protocol' (S-HTTP) is an alternative mechanism to the https URI scheme for encrypting web communications carried over HTTP. S-HTTP is defined in RFC 2660.  (HTTP/s, Internet Protocol), FTP over a virtual private network (VPN), or dial IP (Internet protocol) - as well as a variety of eXtensible markup language See XML.
