In a landmark alliance between Government Computer News and ZDBOp, the ZD Benchmark Operation, Ziff-Davis Inc. (NYSE NYSE

"GCN is excited about this alliance," said Thomas (language) Thomas - A language compatible with the language Dylan(TM). Thomas is NOT Dylan(TM).

, GCN Editorial Director. "We felt ZD benchmarks would provide our readers with superior insight into the performance of PCs and servers. Our research consistently shows that for government managers who specify and buy IT, lab-based product reviews are the highest-read and most-sought editorial content. This agreement brings the industry's best benchmarks to GCN readers' favorite material."

ZDBOp creates a comprehensive suite of benchmarks that provide meaningful, real-world results. A benchmark is a computer program that tests performance. Besides Winstone and WinBench for desktop systems, ZDBOp develops many other benchmarks, including NetBench, WebBench, and ServerBench for servers, and BatteryMark for portable computers.

Mark L. Van Name, Vice President of Product Testing for ZD, said, "We are delighted to partner with GCN to bring their readers these industry-standard tools to help them make smart choices in a fast-moving marketplace."

Research conducted by GCN Lab Director Michael Cheek found that the majority of government managers specifying a benchmark from major computer manufacturers before buying overwhelmingly request ZD benchmark results.

"I found ZD benchmarks better than any others available," Cheek said. "Our readers will be able to visit the ZDBOp Web site (http://www.zdbop.com) to download To receive a file transmitted over a network. In any communications session, "download" means receive, and "upload" means send. The download/upload often implies a big/little scenario, in which data is being downloaded from the "big" server into the "little" user's computer.  or order the exact same benchmarks we will be using."

GCN will begin using Winstone 99, WinBench 99 and others in a summer issue.
