GAY TODD COMING OUT OF THE STREET; Corrie star Bruno quits so he can 'develop as an actor'.
CORONATION Street star Bruno Langley is quitting his role as gay Todd Grimshaw.
Bruno, 21, is fed up with the part - despite being at the centre of the year's biggest and most controversial soap plot.
Todd lives with pregnant fiancee Sarah Platt but fell for nurse Karl Foster. Viewers will see them romp in bed next week.
But last night Bruno, 21, said he was leaving "to develop as an actor" - and hinted he feels the character has run its course.
His final scenes will be in the autumn but Todd will not be killed off, allowing him to return.
Street insiders say viewers can expect an explosive finale to the storyline.
Bruno, who joined Coronation Street in 2001, said his years on the show had been "some of the happiest of my life."
He said: "The current storyline has been fantastic and I am looking forward to seeing how the writers will develop it for my departure.
But he added: "I have worked on Coronation Street since I left college at 18 and I feel it is time to develop myself as an actor."
Producer Tony Wood said: "He has been an asset to the show and his portrayal of the sexually confused Todd has been superb."
In the show Todd has been torn between his love for mum-of-one Sarah, played by Tina O'Brien, and his growing feelings for Karl - actor Chris Finch.
Ironically, Bruno dated Tina in real life until last year. She is now seeing co-star Ryan Thomas, who plays Todd's older brother Jason.
In coming weeks viewers will see Todd struggle to come to terms with his sexuality and Sarah's discovery of his betrayal.
Bruno joined the Weatherfield cast three years ago with Ryan and Sue Cleaver, who plays their mum Eileen.
Todd abandoned his studies and a chance of a place at Oxford University to live with Sarah and her daughter Bethany.
The first signs of his sexual confusion came last year when he made a drunken pass at Sarah's brother Nick, played by Adam Rickitt.
