GATEWAY 2000 REDUCES HANDBOOK PRICE TO $995; ASSERTS ITS LEADERSHIP ROLE IN SUBNOTEBOOK MARKET

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Gateway 2000, the company that brought to market the first fully-functional PC to weigh less than three pounds, further asserted its leadership role in this category by reducing the products's price $300 to under $1,000. The lightweight HandBook is now only $995.
"The HandBook, introduced last August, was the pioneer product in its size class," said Gateway 2000 President Ted Waitt. "As more users experience the true mobility and usability that only the HandBook offers, we expect the term, `HandBook-class,' will replace the term, `subnotebook.' A real PC at a $1,000 price point in this form factor is unique in the industry. Nowhere else can you get this much computer power in such a convenient package for this kind of price."
 NEW WORDPERFECT OFFER
Gateway recently started shipping the HandBook standard with WordPerfect 5.1 at no extra cost. WordPerfect, acclaimed as the best DOS word processing package, retails for $495.
"This is the ideal word processing platform for the HandBook," said Waitt. "The combination of our WordPerfect offer and the $300 price reduction represents an incredible $700 value."
 AWARDS
The HandBook's innovative combination of performance, features and size has garnered it several industry awards. Popular Science magazine named the HandBook one of 1992's "Best of What's New," and BYTE magazine gave the HandBook an "Award of Distinction." In addition, the HandBook was a finalist in PC/Computing's MVP awards.
 FEATURES
The 2.7-pound HandBook features Chips & Technologies' PC/Chip processor and comes standard with 1MB of RAM expandable to 3MB, a 78-key touch-typeable keyboard, a bright, 640 x 400, 7.6-inch backlit display, a 40MB hard drive, one serial and one parallel port, MS DOS and InterLink transfer software. Microsoft Works for DOS is also available as an alternative to WordPerfect.
On its nickel metal hydride battery (NiMH), the HandBook runs up to 4.5 hours with power management (2.5 hours without it). An Alkaline battery pack that holds six AA batteries also comes with the unit.
The HandBook's screen displays VGA-quality characters, measures 6.75 by 3.5 inches (7.6 inches diagonal) and is capable of nine shades of grey. With the 1.25-pound power supply, total travel weight is four pounds.
Options include a fax modem, a pointing device, a portable printer and a Combo unit that has a 3.5-inch floppy drive and a serial and parallel port. Users may also purchase an extended VIP 24-hour turnaround warranty for one year.
