GATEWAY 2000 CONTINUES TO LEAD INDUSTRY WITH BEST PRODUCT VALUES

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- In pace with its award-winning position as a supplier of "Best Buy" PC systems, Gateway 2000 today announced a number of new product configurations and price changes which further strengthen its position as the undisputed value leader in the PC industry.
 VALUE IN FULLY CONFIGURED SYSTEMS
"While many PC manufacturers are doing everything they can to cut corners to get prices down as low as possible, we are doing just the opposite. Our plans are to continue offering the best value in the industry," said Gateway 2000 president and CEO Ted Waitt. "When you just compare our advertised price points with our competitors' advertised price points, it sometimes appears they offer a comparable price. However, when you upgrade their advertised configurations so that they include the same feature set we include as standard equipment, it's clear we offer much more than value for the money -- and not just by a small margin.
"We learned a long time ago that PC buyers don't want a cheap computer. They want a great computer at a great price, and that's what we offer in a range of price points," continued Waitt. "Our latest price/configuration changes are a perfect example of how we continue to improve on our systems by adding value and lowering prices."

NEW $2,495 NOMAD 450 DXL CONFIGURATION
One of the fastest notebooks on the market, Gateway's Nomad 450DXL, is now available with 4MB of RAM and a 120 MB hard drive for $2,495. The lightweight Nomad weighs only 5.6 pounds and runs up to six hours on its NiCad battery with power management features enabled.
The company's popular original version of the 450DXL, equipped with 8MB of RAM and a 200MB hard drive, remains available at $2,995.
 PURE DIRECT MARKETER
While some direct market suppliers are straying from their roots into retail, and traditional two-step suppliers are testing the direct market, Gateway remains committed to the direct market approach. Gateway is the only major direct-marketer that has not ventured into alternate sales channels. This strategy has made Gateway the clear leader in direct-market PC sales; BIS Strategic Decisions in Norwell, Mass., estimates that Gateway currently has a 40 percent share of the U.S. direct market while No. 2 Dell has an 18 percent market share.
"We have no plans to change our distribution strategy," said Waitt. "By concentrating on direct marketing, our cost of business is lower, and we have the flexibility to bring products to market quickly without having to contend with conflicting obligations.
"The direct market allows us the best means of supporting our customers from the first sale to whatever technical assistance they might need. Our sales reps are trained directly by us on an ongoing basis to be the most knowledgeable in the industry. The same goes for our technical support staff," continued Waitt. "The end-users are our customers, not the dealers. The most important thing to a dealer is how he can make the most money. At Gateway, the most important thing to us is that our customers get the best product at the best price with the best support. And support includes delivery lead times. At a time when some suppliers' lead times have grown to months, expansion of our production capacity has enabled our ship times on custom configurations to shrink to as little as 48 hours on some models."
 TECHNICAL SUPPORT
Gateway supports its customers with a number of services, including: lifetime free access to toll-free technical support; a one-year limited parts-and-labor warranty; onsite service calls at most locations in the United States and Canada; lifetime free access to BBS support services; an automated Faxback service for distribution of product and technical documentation; and a 30-day, money-back guarantee.
