National Collegiate Athletic Association and will not have part in the investigation regarding a class where two athletes claimed they received A's for no work. Garrett said the situation will be handled by the provosts of the university. The course, CTSE-101, (Tutoring Elementary, Secondary and University Students) is a two-unit course filled with dozens of athletes over the past two years. In a published report, two athletes said they received high grades for no work. The professor, Vernon Broussard, said the course is based on group study and not necessarily class attendance, meaning students could get credit for no work. ``This is a two-unit class and we find the professor is doing things in derogatory de·rog·a·to·ry adj. 1. Meanwhile, the NCAA has yet to indicate whether it has received word of the USC internal investigation. Recent history has shown that schools receive lighter penalties when they approach the NCAA with a possible violation. ``The institution has the responsibility to report it,'' Chuck Smrt, NCAA director of enforcement said. ``We will not release any word if we will investigate.'' The first move for the provosts is to find whether USC athletes received preferential treatment in the class. The second obstacle could be dealing with NCAA and Pac-10 officials on campus who could possibly be conducting their own investigation. Officials from both parties have yet to arrive on campus but could in the next week. Smrt refused to speculate on a possible penalty for USC's infraction Violation or infringement; breach of a statute, contract, or obligation.
