GARDENING FANS PAINT TOWN GREEN AND PRETTY.

Byline: Susan Abram Staff Writer

ENCINO - Marsha Stout came all the way from Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. At five packets for $1, how could she resist?

``I need these seeds like I need a hole in the head,'' Stout admitted as she sorted through her collection of green zebra This article is about the tomato cultivar. For the San Francisco-based green publication, see Green Zebra (publication).

For those who have a growing interest in anything from flowers to vegetables, lily ponds to bonsai bonsai (bōn`sī), art of cultivating dwarf trees. Bonsai, developed by the Japanese more than a thousand years ago, is derived from the Chinese practice of growing miniature plants. , Saturday's 18th annual Garden Fair at the Sepulveda Garden Center was like a buried-treasure hunt.

Participants watched demonstrations in pruning, learned about the latest trends in landscaping, bought hard-to-find herbs and strolled through community gardens where plump turnips, purple pansies and wild vines grew.

And, of course, many eventually made their way to the seed bin, where Stout and others - enthusiastic as kids trading baseball cards - crouched down for several minutes to sift and exchange the small envelopes.

``I belong to like a zillion garden clubs,'' said Stout, calling gardening a perfect hobby. ``It's a stress reducer, and look at all the flowers around here. Who wouldn't want to do all that?''

This year's garden fair was smaller than those in years past, said event coordinator Janet LaFrance.

Budget cuts into the city's Department of Recreation and Parks forced organizers to shorten the event from two days to one. But the fair still went on without a hitch, LaFrance said, and garden enthusiasts seemed pleased that their favorite event was still around.
