GARDEN SHOWPLACES VALLEY RESIDENTS TURN THEIR YARDS INTO WONDERLANDS.


While some homeowners see their yards as little more than rectangular plots to house Bermuda grass Bermuda grass, perennial pasture, lawn, and hay grass (Cynodon dactylon) of the family Gramineae (grass family), native to Africa and Asia and now common in warm regions of both hemispheres. It is the standard pasture grass in the S United States. , others see a limitless space where water, wood and flowers can be mixed to create unique wonderlands.

Kyoko Kassarjian of Sherman Oaks hopes people enjoy the Japanese garden Japanese gardens (Kanji 日本庭園, nihon teien), that is, gardens in traditional Japanese style, can be found at private homes, in neighborhood or city parks, at Buddhist temples or Shinto shrines, and at historical landmarks such as old castles.  she designed decades ago. The garden is made up of carefully selected trees and shrubs native to Japan - except for one cala lily plant.

``It grew there and I left it,'' Kassarjian said. ``It's kind of pretty.''
