The Jake Kuredjian Memorial Garden, complete with pond and waterfall, rests in a secluded area behind the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. ``Every time I see one of these roses it reminds me of when Jake was alive,'' said Mike Chinery, a deputy and longtime friend, crying as he addressed the crowd. ``Jake and I go way back. There's so much love in this garden.''

About 60 people attended the ceremony, which also honored Sgt. Arthur Pelino Sr., who in 1978 was shot and killed while on duty in Gorman. Pelino was the first deputy based at the Santa Clarita Valley station to lose his life on the job.

Framed portraits of both men hung beside a memorial plaque for the occasion. The image of a smiling, uniformed Kuredjian on his motorcycle has become well known in the area since his death Aug. 31, 2001, when he was helping serve a warrant to a Stevenson Ranch Stevenson Ranch, California (in the 91381 ZIP Code) is a Los Angeles County, USA, unincorporated community west of Santa Clarita a few miles south of Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park. ``This is wonderful. I will come here all the time,'' Annie Kuredjian said. ``(But) it is as hard as ever.''

Garo Kuredjian, the youngest of three brothers, said he will add the memorial garden to his frequent trips to Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987.
