GARDEN BLOOMS FOR FAIR SEPULVEDA BEGINS GROWING SEASON.

ENCINO -- With acres of flowers blooming just south of the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. It is the principal east-west route through Ventura County and in the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County. , the Sepulveda Garden Center is expected to draw about 1,000 people this weekend to its Country Garden Fair, where visitors can buy plants and crafts, listen to music, visit an array of garden plots and see a bonsai bonsai (bōn`sī), art of cultivating dwarf trees. The free family event is offered at the start of the summer growing season growing season, period during which plant growth takes place. In temperate climates the growing season is limited by seasonal changes in temperature and is defined as the period between the last killing frost of spring and the first killing frost of autumn, at which  to provide information and inspiration to home gardeners in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and help people get to know exactly what is offered at the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

"This is a great place. When you are driving by on the freeway, there is no awareness it is here," said Jon Kopitzke, one of the visitors to the center Saturday with his wife Cheryl.

The Sepulveda Garden Center opened in 1966 and includes about 16 acres with more than 400 garden plots -- each about 10 feet by 20 feet -- in which individuals can plant fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs.

Some of the gardeners grow food for animals Food for Animals is a band[1] formed in the surrounding areas of Washington, D.C., the ever expanding group features Andrew Field-Pickering, Ricky Rabbit, Daniel, and Sterling Warren. "It's a supportive group of people who find gardening psychologically and spiritually inspiring," he said.

The Sepulveda Garden Center usually is open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day and one evening a week during the summer. It's closed on holidays.

The plots at the center rent for $20 a year with rototilling provided for $5, and soil supplements and tools available on site.

It is against the rules to enter someone else's garden plot without his or her permission, and no fruits, vegetables or flowers may be picked from another person's plot.

The regular gardeners say it is maddening when they find an unauthorized visitor eating the fruits and vegetables they have worked so hard to grow.

Azadouhie Babi of Van Nuys was working Saturday in her plot, where she grows eggplant, poppies, grapes, fava beans, tomatoes and other crops.

"It's organic. I prefer everything organic," she said. "It's a lot of work, but it's fun at the same time. People stop by and say they are amazed."
