There were some who questioned the Dodgers' decision to sign Nomar Garciaparra Anthony Nomar Garciaparra[1] (born July 23, 1973, in Whittier, California) is a Mexican-American baseball player who currently plays third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers. , a one-time marquee player whose best days and best health appeared to be behind him. Those questions only intensified when Garciaparra spent the season's first two weeks on the disabled list.

Somehow, those questions now seem to have abated.

Showing the same knack for coming through in the clutch that personified his years as one of the majors' best shortstops and most feared hitters, Garciaparra slammed a three-run homer in the second inning and doubled to key a tying rally in the fifth.

But it was Olmedo Saenz and Rafael Furcal Rafael Antoni Furcal[1] (born August 24, 1977 in Loma de Cabrera, Dominican Republic),[2] nicknamed "Fookie", is a shortstop in Major League Baseball who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  who broke a tie with back-to- back RBI RBI

Garciaparra missed by inches coming through on two other occasions.

He hit a long fly ball that landed several rows deep in the leftfield seats but foul by no more than a couple of feet before striking out in the first inning. Then, with runners on first and second and two outs in the sixth, Garciaparra hit a sinking liner that hard-charging right fielder right fielder

just got to and hauled in.

To that point, Garciaparra had eight hits in his past 16 at-bats, half of which had gone for extra bases.

Meanwhile, Dodgers center fielder Jason Repko Jason Edward Repko (born December 27, 1980 in East Chicago, Indiana) is an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Primarily a utility outfielder, his career had been slowed by numerous injuries.  left the game in the top of the first inning after leaping to the top of the wall in an unsuccessful attempt to take a home run away from Morgan Ensberg Morgan Paul Ensberg (born August 26, 1975 in Hermosa Beach, California) is a third baseman in Major League Baseball for the San Diego Padres. .

Repko hung on the wall momentarily, then landed so hard on his left ankle that he couldn't continue. The injury was diagnosed as a sprain sprain, stretching or wrenching of the ligaments and tendons of a joint, often with rupture of the tissues but without dislocation. Sprains occur most commonly at the ankle, knee, or wrist joints, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the involved joint. , and Repko is day to day.

Garciaparra now has played the hero in three of the past four games, giving the Dodgers walkoff victories both Friday and Saturday over Milwaukee with almost identical run-scoring singles up the first-base line, the first of which dribbled up the line and ultimately caromed off the bag.

He is hitting .400 (8 for 20) with runners in scoring position, including .636 (7 for 11) with less than two outs.

Garciaparra turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-1 lead with a no-doubter to left in the third inning, his third home run of the season. J.D. Drew followed with a solo shot, giving the Dodgers back-to-back homers for the first time this season.

But that three-run cushion wasn't enough for struggling right-hander Jae Seo, who gave it all back before he so much as recorded an out in the top of the fourth.

Preston Wilson began the inning with a single up the middle, after which Lane homered. Seo then walked Brad Ausmus, after which Adam Everett homered, putting the Astros back on top 6-5.

Seo wouldn't survive the inning. And on a day when enigmatic starter Odalis Perez was banished to the bullpen for a long relief role, the Dodgers could have used him in just such a role. Too bad he won't be available until tonight.

Instead, manager Grady Little was forced to make do with Franquelis Osoria, who gave him three solid innings at a crucial time, and Jonathan Broxton, who inherited a two-on, one-out situation from Osoria and escaped with two huge groundball outs.

Broxton then turned in a scoreless seventh, erasing a walk to Lane by getting Ausmus to line into a double play.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, tied the game in the fifth. After Jose Cruz singled to begin the inning, Garciaparra doubled into the rightfield corner.

Although Cruz subsequently was out at the plate when Drew hit a grounder to first on a contact play, Jeff Kent then came through with a game-tying single to left.

Ensberg's homer gave the Astros a 2-0 lead, but the Dodgers cut that in half in the second inning when Bill Mueller beat out an infield single, Kenny Lofton dropped a bloop bloop   Baseball

double just inside the leftfield foul line, and Russell Martin plated Mueller with a groundout to short. Seo then hit an arcing liner to right-center, but just as he would do later with Garciaparra, Lane ran it down to end the inning.

The Dodgers got runners to first and second with none out in the sixth when Lance Berkman bobbled Broxton's bunt. But for whatever reason, Furcal furcal /fur·cal/ (fur´k'l) shaped like a fork; forked.

He then swung and missed at the next pitch, and Cruz and Garciaparra went down quickly to end the threat.
