GAO issues exposure draft of updated guidance on revised CPE requirements.


In 2003, the Government Accountability Office The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is the audit, evaluation, and investigative arm of the United States Congress, and thus an agency in the Legislative Branch of the United States Government.  issued a comprehensive revision to Government Auditing Standards (also referred to as the Yellow Book). As part of that revision, continuing professional education requirements were modified so that the 80 hours of CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) Communications equipment that resides on the customer's premises.

CPE - Customer Premises Equipment
 auditors needed every two years would "directly enhance the auditor's professional proficiency to perform audits and/or attestation The act of attending the execution of a document and bearing witness to its authenticity, by signing one's name to it to affirm that it is genuine. The certification by a custodian of records that a copy of an original document is a true copy that is demonstrated by his or her  engagements." The GAO had previously issued an interpretation of its CPE requirements in 1991. Now, due to the revised CPE requirements in the 2003 Yellow Book, the GAO has issued an exposure draft of updated guidance on its CPE requirements titled, Guidance on GAGAS GAGAS Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAO)  Requirements for Continuing Professional Education. Comments on the proposed guidance are due Nov. 30. The exposure draft can be found at www.gao.gov/govaud/cpe_ed0410.pdf.
