GAMBRO ACQUIRES UK ANESTHESIA COMPANY; ALSO ANNOUNCES REORGANIZATION
AND STRENGTHENING OF INTENSIVE CARE AND ANESTHESIA BUSINESS
LUND, Sweden, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Gambro Group (NASDAQ: GAMBY) announced today that it has acquired the British company Medical and Industrial Equipment Limited ("MIE"), based in Exeter, southwest England. MIE manufactures and distributes anesthesia equipment and consumable accessory products. The price of the transaction was not disclosed.
MIE, which was founded in 1936, formerly operated as a division of Dentsply Limited, whose parent company is the American company Dentsply International Inc. MIE has 80 employees and its sales in 1991 were 3.9 million pounds sterling.
MIE holds a strong position in the United Kingdom and sells more than 50 percent of its products in the domestic market, which is served directly by the company's own sales organization. Other markets are cultivated by agents. Anesthesia machines account for 60 percent of the MIE range, with the balance consisting of consumable accessory products such as "Superlite" connectors, soda lime, face masks and ventilation bags.
New Organization for Gambro's Intensive Care
 and Anesthesia Business
Effective Jan. 12, 1992, the Gambro Group's intensive care and anesthesia operations will be grouped under joint management in one business area.
The reorganization affects operations in the following units:
-- Gambro Engstrom AB, Stockholm, Sweden
 -- Soxil SpA, Felino, Italy
-- Engstrom Elektromedizin, GmbH, Munich, Germany
together with all intensive care and anesthesia operations on major markets that are currently handled by agents.
Head of the new business area is Otto Svensson, former managing director of the dialysis company Gambro Instrumenta in Lund, Sweden.
 Reinforcing the Intensive Care and
 Anesthesia Business Area
"With these organization changes and through the acquisition of MIE, the Gambro Group is reinforcing its Intensive Care and Anesthesia Business Area which in 1991 represented approximately 7 percent of total sales," said Gambro President and CEO Berthold Lindqvist. "We are improving the business area organization to increase our profitability and marketing focus. The new organization will also facilitate the transfer of technology between companies and increase production efficiency," he said.
Lindqvist continued, "Through the acquisition of MIE, the Intensive Care and Anesthesia Business Area is provided with a very strong position in the U.K. market. A new British production and sales company is being established consisting of MIE and the Intensive Care Division of the Gambro UK company based in Sidcup, Kent. The new company will offer the British market an extensive program of equipment for intensive care and anesthesia activities, ranging from state-of-the-art anesthesia machines to high-quality consumable articles.
The Gambro Group, one of the world's leading companies in the field of medical technology, is engaged primarily in the development and marketing of products for the treatment of blood outside of the body. It is the world's largest manufacturer of hemodialysis equipment. The company is also a leader in developing products for cardiovascular surgery and blood component technology as well as a leading manufacturer of products used in intensive care and anesthesia, principally respirators.
