The board voted unanimously at a special meeting Thursday to name Gallizzi to the post. ``The focus is on curriculum. Mr. Gallizzi has quite a bit of knowledge and expertise in that area,'' board President Sheldon Epstein said. ``He's articulate, intelligent and is up to the task.'' Epstein said Gallizzi will not be applying for the permanent position and will assist in the search for a new superintendent. Gallizzi also will continue in his job as assistant superintendent of personnel. He is expected to hold the top administrative job for three to five months, Epstein said. Gyves, 69, announced June 14 that he would retire at the end of the month. He has been with Palmdale since October 2003, when he was named interim superintendent. He took the permanent post the following January. Board members credited Gyves with developing a more standardized, coherent curriculum, guiding the district through tough fiscal times and stricter accountability, and opening up communication between district administrators and the schools. Gallizzi has worked 17 years in the Palmdale School District, first starting out as a teacher at Yucca Elementary School elementary school: see school. .
