PALMDALE -- Assistant Superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  Roger Gallizzi will serve as interim superintendent of the Palmdale School District The Palmdale School District is a school district that serves a major part of the city of Palmdale, California (USA).

The Palmdale School District was first formed in 1888. Approximately 28,000 students are enrolled in the Palmdale School District.

Gallizzi, 47, the assistant superintendent for personnel, will take the interim post July 1.

``I'm pleased with the confidence that the board has in me, and I'm looking forward to providing a smooth transition between Dr. Gyves and the next superintendent,'' he said.

The board voted unanimously at a special meeting Thursday to name Gallizzi to the post.

``The focus is on curriculum. Mr. Gallizzi has quite a bit of knowledge and expertise in that area,'' board President Sheldon Epstein said. ``He's articulate, intelligent and is up to the task.''

Epstein said Gallizzi will not be applying for the permanent position and will assist in the search for a new superintendent. Gallizzi also will continue in his job as assistant superintendent of personnel.

He is expected to hold the top administrative job for three to five months, Epstein said.

Gyves, 69, announced June 14 that he would retire at the end of the month. He has been with Palmdale since October 2003, when he was named interim superintendent. He took the permanent post the following January.

Board members credited Gyves with developing a more standardized, coherent curriculum, guiding the district through tough fiscal times and stricter accountability, and opening up communication between district administrators and the schools.
