But organizers want community members to know it can be their personal gallery, too.

``We have shows by groups or by individuals or by groups of individuals,'' Travers said. ``The rental allows for the art hanging, having a reception and staffing of the gallery. It's up to the group to provide staffing - it's all volunteer here.''

The gallery is usually booked solid. But two last-minute cancellations - the first in six years - have given organizers the opportunity to tout Tout

The gallery, located next to the Newbury Park Branch Library at Borchard Road and Michael Drive, has space available in August. The next opening won't be until January, she said.

``We've gotten a wonderful response,'' Travers said. ``In this part of the county, this is the only gallery where anyone can rent it or use it.''

Groups and individual artists must pay a $575 fee to use the gallery for a month. The fee is discounted for nonprofit organizations Nonprofit Organization

and for shorter, half-month exhibits, Travers said. The gallery also receives 20 percent of anything sold during the show.

The money pays for utilities and security at the gallery, and also allows the steering committee to provide appliances for the kitchen, Travers said. Also on the group's wish list is a museum-quality lighting system, she said.

lights and some spotlights,'' Travers said. ``But lighting has a real impact on colors you see in a painting.''

Groups often rent the gallery to give workshops and classes, Travers said. For example, a group of 35 artists presenting a show this week called ``Splash 397'' is hosting well-known Camarillo artist Phyllis J. Doyon, who will teach a class on monoprinting, Travers said.

Doyon will also give a three-day workshop in watercolor painting watercolor painting, in its wider sense, refers to all pigments mixed with water rather than with oil and also to the paintings produced by this process; it includes fresco and tempera as well as aquarelle, the process now commonly meant by the generic term.  Aug. 27-29, which is open to the public, Travers said.
