Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  remains a territory that Landon Donovan Landon Timothy Donovan (born March 4, 1982 in Ontario, California), is an American professional soccer player on the Los Angeles Galaxy, who is the joint all-time leading scorer for the U.S. National Team (along with Eric Wynalda).  can't wait to defend.

"They thought they were the top dog around here," Donovan said of Chivas. "We showed 'em we've still got them underfoot."

It was the first win of the MLS season for the Galaxy (1-1-1), who had scored only once in their first two games. Before the match was 20 minutes old, they had doubled their total.

Chivas USA (2-2-0) showed little of the attacking firepower the Goats had displayed in their first three games and fell to 1-8-1 all-time against their neighbors.

And when they did show it, veteran goalkeeper Joe Cannon, in his first season with the Galaxy, did a little digging in himself, particularly when the Galaxy clung to a 2-1 second-half lead.

"Joe was outstanding tonight and if he wasn't, we're in trouble," Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said of Cannon, who made five saves.

The game was decided in the 78th minute, and the events left Chivas fuming fuming /fum·ing/ (fum´ing) emitting a visible vapor.

In the 76th minute, Galaxy defender Chris Albright was downed by an elbow delivered by Francisco Mendoza. Albright went to the sidelines while play continued.

When he returned, he walked right into the play and came up with a steal that sent Donovan streaking down the right side of the field. Donovan hopped over Mendoza, sent the ball across to Jones on his left, and Jones finished for a goal in the 78th minute that made it 3-1.

"We're pushing (the game) and in my view we're dominating," Chivas coach Preki said. "It was really bad -- a player comes off the sideline."

At the same time, incensed Chivas midfielder Amado Guevara, whose night was finished after 56 minutes, shoved the fourth official and was ejected.

Chivas played without midfielder Sacha Kljestan, who sat out the first of a two-game suspension handed down by MLS.

The Galaxy's lineup had two significant changes. Rookie Robbie Findley started at forward, pushing Nate Jaqua back to midfield, and Harmse got his first MLS start at midfield with Jones getting some rest.

Both Galaxy moves paid off. Harmse picked up his first goal and the speedy Findley was a constant terror with his bursts and his work around the goal.
