GALAXY NABS STRIKER IN SURPRISING DEAL.

Byline: Fred J. Robledo San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire.  Tribune

In what Galaxy general manager Daniel Villanueva described as ``a bombshell for Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, ,'' Major League Soccer has successfully lured Mexico's all-time leading scorer, Carlos Hermosillo Carlos Manuel Hermosillo Goytortua (born August 24, 1964 in Cerro Azul, Veracruz, Mexico) is a Mexican soccer player, one of the top all-time goalscorers for the Mexican national team. He's also known as "El Grandote de Cerro Azul". , to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

One of the biggest acquisitions in MLS See multilevel security.  history occurred thanks to a last-minute move Wednesday in Acapulco. Twenty minutes before the Mexican League's deadline for players to change teams, MLS deputy commissioner Sunil Gulati reached an agreement with Hermosillo's former team - Cruz Azul - and his newest team, Necaxa. Gulati had spent three years trying to coax Hermosillo, one of Mexico's most popular players, to join the MLS.

Galaxy defender Robin Fraser remembers Hermosillo from last year's CONCACAF CONCACAF Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Soccer)

Champions Cup, where Hermosillo scored two goals for Cruz Azul in a 5-3 victory over the Galaxy. He had nothing but praise for his newest teammate.

``You're talking about one of the best forwards in the world,'' Fraser said. ``He's probably the best post-up forward I've ever played against. He's huge, has a great presence and is great in the air. Obviously, he's phenomenally experienced and he's going to bolster what is already a pretty strong front line.''

The deal, a two-year contract through the 1999 season, is similar to that of former Galaxy goalkeeper Jorge Campos, who was traded to Chicago on Jan. 27 with Chris Armas for goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and defender Danny Pena.

The Campos deal made the Hermosillo acquisition possible because MLS promised the Galaxy a fifth foreign allocated player.

Like Campos, who played with the Galaxy and his club team in Mexico, Hermosillo, 33, will play with Los Angeles until its season is complete, then join Necaxa in the fall.

Hermosillo, a 6-foot-1 striker, was a member of Mexico's 1986 and '94 World Cup teams. He also was a key component for former Mexican national team coach Bora bo·ra

Hermosillo was expected to sign with Chivas of Guadalajara on Monday, but when that fell through, Gulati, in Mexico looking at other players, made a deal with Cruz Azul and Necaxa.

``When we came down here we had no intention to try and sign Carlos,'' Gulati said during a conference call. ``When his deal with Chivas fell through, we met with Cruz Azul's president and made a tentative agreement with Carlos and another club (Necaxa).''
