GALAXY MAKES ITS MOVE FIVE-PLAYER TRADE WITH DALLAS MEANT TO ADDRESS WEAKNESSES.

Byline: Fred J. Robledo Staff Writer

CARSON - In the boldest move since it sent away a promising young scoring prospect named Clint Mathis Clint Mathis (born November 25, 1976 in Conyers, Georgia) is a soccer forward/midfielder who currently plays for the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer after making his name with the MetroStars.  and two others to make room for Mexico's Luis Hernandez in 2000, the Galaxy has orchestrated a multiplayer trade with Dallas in an effort to shake up its snake-bitten team and make a run at a second consecutive Major League Soccer title.

In a five-player swap with fellow Western Conference team Dallas completed late Thursday, the Galaxy obtained all-star defender and U.S. national team prospect Ryan Suarez Ryan Suarez (born July 28, 1977 in Sacramento, California) is an American soccer player, who last played in United Soccer Leagues for the California Victory.

Suarez played college soccer at San Jose St. from 1997 to 2000, and was named an NCAA All-American his senior season.
, along with attacking midfielder Antonio Martinez and defensive midfielder Paul Broome Paul Broome (born June 6, 1976 in Dallas, Texas) is an American soccer left back who last played for Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer.

Broome played soccer (and excelled in football) for Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, TX.
.

The Galaxy, in return, traded away one of its most popular defenders in attacking outside back Ezra Hendrickson Ezra Hendrickson (born January 16, 1972 in Layou, St. Vincent) is a Vincentian Football (soccer) player who currently plays defender for the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer. , voted the Galaxy's team MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  in 2001, along with second-year scoring prospect Gavin Glinton Gavin Glinton (born March 1 1979 in Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands) is a Turks & Caicos Islands soccer striker who currently plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer.

Glinton joined USL First Division team Charleston Battery for the 2006 season.
.

The Galaxy also sent its first-round choice in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft The MLS SuperDraft is an annual event in which the Major League Soccer teams select players who have graduated from college or otherwise been signed by the league. The SuperDraft was first instituted in 2000, as a combination of the MLS College Draft, in which players having  to Dallas in exchange for a conditional choice in the 2004 draft. The team also waived defender/midfielder Jose Retiz to make room on its roster.

Suarez, Martinez and Broome joined the Galaxy in Seoul, South Korea, late Friday, where the Galaxy is set to compete in the World Peace King Cup beginning next week.

of the MLS See multilevel security.  season passed, the Galaxy is 3-6-7 and coming off its first loss at the Home Depot Center on Wednesday, falling 1-0 to last-place Colorado.

Vice president and general manager Doug Hamilton had seen enough.

``If every result had gone our way, we wouldn't have felt the need for change,'' Hamilton said. ``But the results haven't gone our way, and we have a responsibility to our owners and fans to improve our club. The fans in Southern California in general are result-oriented, and we feel this move is a step in the right direction.''

On paper, it's a good trade for both teams.

Hendrickson, who scored 17 goals with the Galaxy to go with 25 assists from 1998 to 2002 as a sneaky outside defender, had struggled since moving to the midfield this season and hadn't been a threat offensively. He went to the bench recently in favor of Chris Albright, who quickly scored three goals in two games.

As a result, Hendrickson became expendable, and with his reputation the Galaxy was able to acquire an up-and-coming defender in the 6-foot-2 Suarez. It also receives a much-needed attacking midfielder in Martinez, who had four goals with 10 assists in 26 games for the Burn last season.

Suarez, who played at San Jose State and will turn 26 this month, was a finalist for MLS Rookie of the Year Rookie of the Year may refer to:

honors in 2002. He made his U.S. national team debut May 26, starting and playing the first 77 minutes in a 2-0 victory over Wales Wales, Welsh Cymru, western peninsula and political division (principality) of Great Britain (1991 pop. 2,798,200), 8,016 sq mi (20,761 sq km), west of England; politically united with England since 1536. The capital is Cardiff. .

Martinez was born in Mexico but returns to Carson, where he grew up and later attended Cal State Fullerton. Only 24, he is in his fourth MLS season. He has totaled seven goals and 23 assists this season and was Dallas' third-leading scorer in 2002.

Broome, 27, is a former first-round draft pick in 1999 and gives the Galaxy another strong defensive midfielder to go with Simon Elliott and Peter Vagenas.

``It was a good trade for us because we didn't have to go way out of our way to improve our team,'' Hamilton said. ``Losing Ezra and a promising forward in Gavin is difficult, but at the same time we are excited to bring in three players that have an opportunity to immediately impact our club.''
