GALAXY IS TIED BY SAN JOSE L.A.'S WOES CONTINUE, AND THINGS DON'T FIGURE TO IMPROVE GALAXY 1, SAN JOSE 1.

PASADENA - With more than a third of the season gone and more than a third of its original starters sent elsewhere, the dominant Galaxy team that cruised through March and April is looking more and more like an average team.

Against San Jose, the second-worst team in the MLS, the Galaxy could only manage a 1-1 tie before 17,831 at the Rose Bowl on Saturday night.

The Galaxy's record moved to 6-1-6, but it is 1-1-4 in its last six games. San Jose is 2-6-4.

Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid warned this could happen, and has mentioned countless times that the Galaxy may as well start the season over again with so many recent changes.

With the allocation of newly acquired Mexican striker Luis Hernandez, the Galaxy is feeling the loss of departed starters Clint Mathis, Roy Myers and Joey Franchino - all lost in the Hernandez fiasco.

The problems are widespread:

--Rookie central defender Danny Califf is getting baptized while Robin Fraser recovers from a strained ankle.

--Striker Cobi Jones hasn't scored since April 1, and the Galaxy has only six goals in its last six games after scoring 15 goals in its first seven games.

--Hernandez, touted as the league's franchise player, is without a goal in two games and may need two or three more weeks until he is finally in sync with the offense.

What else, or does there need to be anything else? The U.S. Cup begins next week and the Galaxy will lose Fraser, Jones and Greg Vanney to the U.S. team while Hernandez joins Mexico for the next two weeks.

At least Schmid has until September to sort this out.
