The project is located near the northern edge of the San Fernando Valley on Tujunga Wash, about one mile below the confluence of the Big Tujunga Wash Recreation Area. The Gabrielino Equestrian Park, set to be dedicated today, was sought for some two decades by equestrians who contend the horse-rich area needed a public riding space. It is the third equestrian center operated by the city parks department, with the others in Sylmar and Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. The 25-acre park became a popular spot for live music and parties where public drunkenness was a problem, particularly with people swimming in what remains of old Holiday Lake. Parking also poured onto streets in nearby neighborhoods, he said. ``There was a lot of amplified sound. Also if there was an emergency, we had some situations where the park could not be entered by our police or fire department safely,'' Ward said. ``We actually had some instances where people did get injured. There were some close drownings.'' Park officials first improved Hansen Dam Park, which is in the recreation area's northwest corner, to absorb and control the large weekend crowds. Then officials tapped the city's share of Los Angeles County park-bond funds to pay for the $825,000 equestrian park, located next to the private Hansen Dam Equestrian Center, which is operated by a vendor under a lease agreement with the city. The project was completed as the department was finishing the Hansen Dam swimming and boating lakes that opened in August. ``We have over 12 miles of trails in the Hansen Dam area and they're linked to more in the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve.
