GAA: The Big Apple's ready to bite back; NEW YORK v MAYO.

Byline: PAUL KEANE Paul Keane (born in 1958) is an Australian actor well known for playing Des Clarke in the soap opera Neighbours. Other TV credits include Bliss and Flight Into Hell. He was trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1983.

MAYO manager John Maughan will wait until tomorrow before deciding on his starting line-up to face New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 in their Connacht Championship opener.

Austin O'Malley, Trevor Mortimer and James Nallen are all injury worries but should make the grade.

The Mayo panel have been in the Big Apple since Thursday and will stay on for an intensive training camp in the nearby Catskill Mountains Catskill Mountains, dissected plateau of the Appalachian Mt. system, SE N.Y., W of the Hudson River. This glaciated region, wooded and rolling, with deep gorges and many waterfalls, is drained by the headstreams of the Delaware River and by Esopus, Schoharie, .

The extended break will be a chance for prodigal PRODIGAL, civil law, persons. Prodigals were persons who, though of full age, were incapable of managing their affairs, and of the obligations which attended them, in consequence of their bad conduct, and for whom a curator was therefore appointed.

This year has been about transition for Mayo and lads like Damien Munnelly, Austin O'Malley, Andy Moran, Billy Joe Padden and Dermot Geraghty are seen as the new wave of talent.

Maughan has high hopes for them and he will be quietly confident of starting as they mean to go on tomorrow.

New York boss Pat Scanlon has been happy with his team's build-up to the tie and they have expereienced campaigners in the likes of Monaghan's Michael Slowey and, ironically, Mayo man Dermot Costello in their ranks.

Since the new system which sees Connacht teams jet out to New York on a rotating basis was put in place, the games have been interesting affairs.

New York put it up to Sligo in 2002 before taking Leitrim to within two points last year so Maughan will be wary of a possible disaster.

As Scanlon put it: "We've been knocking on the door for some time now, maybe this is our time."

VERDICT: Mayo
