GAA: Lose this one Peter & you'll be known as Jimmy White; ULSTER FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP CANAVAN'S LAST CHANCE.

Byline: Joe Brolly Joe Brolly (Irish: Seosamh Ó Brollaigh; born 25 June 1969) is an Irish Gaelic footballer who played for Derry. He was part of Derry's 1993 All-Ireland Championship winning side and played for Dungiven.

PRESIDENT George W Bush, leader of the free world The "Leader of the Free World" is a title used sometimes to describe the President of the United States, though the title is debated by those who consider themselves to be part of the "Free World", but not under the leadership of the United States. , said recently: "I have strong opinions on this subject, but I don't always agree with them."

This sums up how I feel about tomorrow's big game in Ulster.

On the one hand, Tyrone look young and exciting and with the injection of new blood, a fit again Peter Canavan Peter Canavan (born April 9, 1971) is a former Gaelic football player for Tyrone. He represented Ireland in the International Rules Series on several occasions from 1998 until 2000.  and a return of a bit of the old Tyrone steel and passion, can beat an Armagh team worn out after three years of long, fruitless campaigns.

On the other hand, Tyrone have six debutantes, an ageing Peter Canavan past his best, an untested forward line and raw midfielders.

Tomorrow they take the field against a powerful, aggressive and battle-hardened team who have had a good break since last August and are returning to the fray stronger, more confident and hungrier.Either one of these theories is possible, so it is difficult to predict how this game will develop. For both teams, this is their first serious game in almost a year and a lot can change in that time.

In 1995 and 1996 for example Tyrone blazed through Ulster. The same team took the field in the 1997 championship against Derry and were blown apart to the tune of 16 points. They were simply worn out. The appetite was gone.

So the big question is whether Armagh can maintain the momentum for another year. I cannot see them suffering a dramatic collapse.

Unlike that Tyrone team, whose fortunes were largely based on the magnificence of Canavan, their game is not based on individuals. They are a team with very strong foundations.

The two Brians have a clear approach to football. First and foremost, they look for powerful aggressive competitors.

The McNulty's Kieran Hughes, McCann, McGrane, Reid and McGeeney prove the point. Team strategy is based around all out defence. Two or three forwards track back into the defence to crowd the opposing forward line and strangle Strangle

the space. Then they play on the break.

O'Hagan, McEntee, Marsden and O'Rourke are all hard working, powerful ball winners. (Derry's Paul McFlynn told me recently they will make 10 50-yard runs simply to create space.) They then take their men on one and one. They win frees. And Oisin ices the cake.

It is a simple effective game plan. It means that most of their games are not pretty sights. But it gets results. Is this young Tyrone team ready to meet the challenge?

Well, if Armagh play with the passion they showed in last year's campaign, Tyrone's six debutantes will find themselves in a whole new world.

Granted, most of the six have minor and under 21 All-Irelands. But this is a massive step up.

A few of them (Stephen O'Neill

However, even they will be surprised at the fury that follows the throw in. Assessing Tyrone is difficult.

Last year they surrendered tamely enough against Armagh although their defence played well. Oisin was kept very quiet and the underrated Chris Lawn Chris Lawn is a former Tyrone Gaelic footballer. Along with Peter Canavan, he is one of only two Tyrone men to be on the panel for three All-Ireland Finals (1995, 2003 and 2005), although he was on the substitutes bench for the entirety of the 2003 final, and came on as a  (the back lawn) had Marsden in his pocket.

However, they were unable to make any headway against Armagh's blanket defence. Eoin Gormley under-performed some of the others looked out of their depth and Canavan came on as a late sub with the game already over.

This year's league has done them the world of good and would have been even better had they not been thrown out of it on the weakest scientific evidence. Ryan McMenamin Ryan 'Ricey' McMenamin is a Canadian-born Irish Gaelic football player who plays for Tyrone. He plays his club football for Dromore in Tyrone.

in the right corner has also been impressive. Strong, game and well built ('pudgy' a Dromore man said to me last week), he has the priceless gift of being two footed.

Very direct, he prefers to go in for goals and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

The usual instruction to forwards is to "go for your points and the goals will come."

However, the Great Sean O'Neill (a world authority on goals) had different advice: "Go for your goals and settle for a point only if you can't get a goal." This is certainly Mulligan's motto and Tyrone people will be hoping he can put it into practice tomorrow.

They will also be hoping that young Kevin Hughes Kevin Michael Hughes (15 December 1952 – 16 July 2006) was a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. A favourite of Art's, he has great natural ability, but has never performed on the big stage and I have grave doubts as to whether he can change his stripes at this stage.

As for Peter, he is apparently going well at the moment, but he will never recapture the glories of his early years and can no longer carry this team.

However, if his forward colleagues commit themselves to the battle with him, they have a chance. That said, I think that the Armagh match has come too soon for them.

I suspect they will be beaten tomorrow. Armagh's line up looks ominously strong.

If they pick up where they left off last August (and there are no guarantees they can do this) then it is hard to look past them. Tyrone will then concentrate on the qualifiers.

If they get a few qualifiers under their belt this young team could well blossom. Otherwise, Peter Canavan will forever be the Jimmy White of Gaelic football Gaelic football: see under football.
