WESTMEATH chiefs have ruled midfielder David O'Shaughnessy out of Sunday's O'Byrne Cup The O'Byrne Cup is a Gaelic Athletic Association competition between teams from Leinster. The competition is named after Matt O'Byrne, a former Club Officer in Wicklow. The participants in the O'Byrne Cup are the twelve counties of Leinster and recently four further education  clash with Laois in Mullingar.

The Leinster championship winner is suffering from an achilles problem and is set to miss the opening rounds of the National League.

O'Shaughnessy played no part in the semi-final victory over Louth and joins All-Stars Dessie Dolan and John Keane on the absentee list for Sunday.

A Westmeath spokesman said: "David's achilles tendon Achilles tendon

is giving him trouble and he'll have to rest for a good while yet. At the moment he's not close to playing football."

Meanwhile, Nickey Brennan has moved quickly to clarify reports that the Hurling Task Force is set to meet to discuss the new rule changes this week.

Brennan, who doubles as Leinster Council Chairman, said: "Somebody got the wrong end of the stick along the line.

"There'd be no point in us meeting because we've only had a few connacht league hurling games so far and there would be, quite simply, nothing for us to talk about."
