Quarterback Trevon Smith, a key football player at first-year school Golden Valley High, has quit the team and said he plans to transfer to Crespi of Encino.

Golden Valley assistant Bill Irace said Smith might have been illegally recruited, but there are no plans to file a complaint with the Southern Section.

``I guess Trevon got promised a lot of things from Crespi. We're not too happy about it,'' Irace said. ``But no one (at Crespi) would ever admit it.''

On Friday, Crespi first-year coach Jeremiah Ross said he's made no contact recently with Smith or his family, though Ross did say he's heard Smith might be arriving.

``I haven't talked to him lately but I remember him when he was a ball boy here and I was an assistant a few years ago,'' Ross said. ``I think he's friends with (Crespi receiver) D.J. Holt, who lives in Santa Clarita.''

It isn't clear if Smith has checked out of Golden Valley, though Irace said he quit practicing with the football team two days before the end of spring drills. Smith wasn't available for comment.

Smith passed for 1,085 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed for 11 touchdowns in eight games last year, as Golden Valley, comprised of ninth and 10th graders, finished 4-4 on the junior varsity level.

The team plays varsity competition for the first time this season as a freelance school, beginning Sept. 9 against visiting Burbank.

Jeremy Carson is the new quarterback he was the team's starting running back last year. He rushed for 581 yards and four touchdowns with 15 receptions for 230 yards. He also was Golden Valley's leading tackler.

``Jeremy is really looking good. He's throwing the ball real well,'' Irace said.

Among the top receivers are returnees Martel Hammond and Julian Easley, along with Valencia transfer Brian Sarpong.

Tyrone Millit, who alternated with Carson at running back last year, should be the main ballcarrier.

--Former Valencia High football standout Geoff Tisdale, who earned All-Western State Conference honors as a freshman at L.A. Valley College last fall after totaling a state-best eight interceptions, is on the verge of securing a Division I scholarship.

``Geoff's a preseason All-American, and he's had an incredible spring,'' Valley coach Jimmy Sims said. ``Eventually, the question isn't going to be who's offering him a scholarship - but who isn't offering.''

Meanwhile, Valley defensive back Brandon Nichols, also from Valencia, has quit the team. He won't be back, according to Sims.

--Saugus football kicker Jeff Jalapan, a junior, has decided not to return next season. Among those hoping to fill the spot is junior Chad Ernsdorf, who played on the junior varsity soccer team this past season.

``Chad said he wants to play, so we'll see what he can do,'' football coach Jason Bornn said. ``If not, we've got some kids from the JV team last season that can kick.''

--The Little League baseball District 40 tournament (12-under), which includes locals Canyon Country East, Canyon Country West and Castaic, begins June 29.

Castaic opens against Granada Hills at 5 p.m. June 30 at Northridge Little League. The winner plays Canyon Country East at 5 p.m. July 5 at Northridge. Canyon Country West opens at 5 p.m. July 1 at Mission Hills Little League against the Mission Hills-San Fernando winner.

The winner advances to the Section 2 tournament, followed by the Southern California Divisionals, the Western Regionals and finally the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

--Valencia High has finalized its football schedule for next season, adding a week four home game against El Toro of Lake Forest at 7 p.m. Oct. 23. El Toro finished 3-7 last season - including five losses by 30 points or more.

--Santa Clarita Christian High softball coach Darcy Brown gave birth to her third child, Kaysa Isabella, on Wednesday - eight days after coaching her final game of the season, a 7-0 semifinal loss at Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Montebello.

Mother and daughter are doing fine. Brown, 36, said she'll return for another season next year. ...

Former Hart football standout Cody Kase, now a sophomore linebacker at New Mexico, could make an impact this season. He led the team with six tackles during an annual spring scrimmage last month.

At New Mexico State, former Valencia lineman Alex Gottlieb, a sophomore, is competing for a starting position on the offensive line.

And in more football alumni news, ex-Canyon lineman Mac May, who's concentrating on academics at Illinois, continues to lift weights, and he recently put up 369 points in the bench press and 600 in the squat at a club tournament.

May also plays intramural football.

``It's flag football, and there are some goofy rules for blocking - we can't use our hands,'' May said.

--The All-Southern Section baseball and softball teams are scheduled to be released June 20. It would be a shock if baseball standouts Thomas Milone from Saugus and Shane Carlso from Hart and softball pitcher Jordan Taylor of Valencia don't earn first-team Div. I honors.
