The 2003 Daily News boys golf Coach of the Year, who will retire after this season, has turned out eight team champions and four individual winners in the past 12 seasons and enters his 39th City final in contention for one last title.

Angel won three consecutive individual titles to spark that run, and Granada Hills added team titles in 1998, 2001, 2003 and last year, when Ok became the Highlanders' first individual winner since Angel.

--State Amateur: Southern Section individual finalist Nick Geyer of Agoura Hills, a Viewpoint High of Calabasas senior, has earned a berth in the June 20-25 State Amateur at Pebble Beach. Geyer, who shot 4-under-par 68 to win his state qualifier at Spring Valley Lake Country Club in Victorville, is one of three area golfers to advance to state by winning a qualifier.

Pepperdine sophomore J.J. Wood shot 8-under 64 to win the qualifier on the Ivanhoe course at Cottonwood of Rancho San Diego, and Thomas Case of Santa Clarita shot 2-under 69 to win at Angeles National Golf Club in Sunland.

Doug Miller of Thousand Oaks, Brandon Christianson of Valencia, Jason Goode of Castaic and Forrest Blake of West Hills (all at Angeles National), Brian Edick of Valencia (at Santaluz Club in San Diego) and Westlake High alum Darren Schwartz (at Cypress Ridge in Arroyo Grande) also have qualified for the State Amateur.

Ladies Professional Golf Association
 Tour event and the centennial Southern California Amateur Championship, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

As part of the celebration, the club is offering a special rate of $25 per player on the 25th of each month, good for the Eisenhower and Zaharias courses. Retired Birmingham High of Lake Balboa golf coach Chick Epstein is back in the prep game, coaching at Milken Community of Los Angeles. The former state high school girls' Coach of the Year, who guided Birmingham to the first City Section girls' title in 2000 and led Milken to this year's Heritage League boys' title, is headed for another championship tournament. Matt Siporin of Milken shot 74 Monday at par-72 Seacliff Country Club in Huntington Beach to qualify for next week's Southern Section individual final.
